How to import your contacts to Mailchimp

Migrating and importing contacts to a new ESP can be a scary thought, especially if you have a large contact base.
But don’t worry. We’ve got you covered with this step-by-step tutorial on how to import your contacts to Mailchimp.
Let’s get started!
Import your contacts through integrated apps
You can either import your contacts with Mailchimp’s integration or with a CSV file.
Mailchimp has integration with six of the most commonly used apps
- Zapier
- Salesforce
- WooCommerce
- QuickBooks Online
- Squarespace Commerce
- Shopsync
If you don’t use any of the integrations above, you can skip to the second option, where we guide you on how to manually import your contacts using a CSV file.

If you are using one of the integrations above, follow the steps below to connect the app you are suing and import your contacts to Mailchimp
1. Click Audience
2. Click Audience dashboard
3. Click Add your Contacts
4. Choose Import from another service
5. Click Continue
6. Click ADD and follow the in-app prompts
7. Click Done once you have installed Mailchimp
That’s it. Now that you have connected your app, Mailchimp will automatically import your contacts.
Import your contacts from a file
If you are using an app or service that Mailchimp does not currently integrate with, then you will need to take a more manual approach.

To Import your contacts to Mailchimp manually, you must first export your contacts from your previous ESP and download the list as a CSV file.

Now that you have downloaded the list, follow these steps to import your contacts to MailChimp.
1. Click Audience
2. Click Audience dashboard
3. Click Add Your Contacts
4. Choose Upload a file
5. Click Browse
6. Navigate to the file you downloaded and upload it to MailChimp
7. Click Continue to Organize

1. Select a status for the list you imported
2. Click Continue to Tag

You can classify the imported contacts with tags to easily make bulk edits to them later(more about classification in the next step)
1. Type a word or phrase that describes the contacts you imported and click Create
2. Click Continue to Match

You will now match the column labels to contact information.
1. Make sure that the attribute in the column label matches the data you imported.
2. If the label is incorrect, click on the label and select the label that matches the data
3. Once you are done matching the data, click Finalize Import
4. review the import and click Complete Import
